Cathy Newton (

Hello, Ottauquechee School families and community members. I want to take the time to introduce myself. My name is Cathy Newton and I live in West Hartford. I am proud and honored to be a new member of your school and community. My family and I moved to this area back in 2000 from Fairlee, Vermont, when I got a job teaching at the Dothan Brook School. I have been with the Hartford School District ever since. My two sons graduated from Hartford High School and are pursuing their dreams each in a way I never would have imagined! My husband Rick teaches at the Marion Cross School in Norwich, where he is PE teacher.

I grew up as an army brat, living in various places around the globe, moving on an average of every two years! After 20 years of service in the army, my father retired and moved us all to Vermont where he was the dean of students at Southern Vermont College and then worked for the United Counseling Service. I finished high school there and attended Johnson State College as an undergrad. In 2003 I received my Master’s degree from UVM.

I have two older siblings, both teachers! My retired brother, Chris, taught in Maine for several years, earning the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching Math and Science, and going on to work for NASA in Houston in their education outreach program. My sister Sue is currently an accomplished middle school science teacher in Lowell, Massachusetts, where she ignites passion for science in her 7th grade students.

Over the years I have had the opportunity to pursue many interests in education from elementary teacher, national presenter, consultant, college instructor, researcher, editor and curriculum specialist to Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment and now as your Principal. As a result of these, in 2008, I too received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching Math and Science. All of my accomplishments in education would not have been possible without the support of the administration here in Hartford, and because of this I intend to lend the same level of support to the staff here at OQS so they may feel empowered to pursue their dreams and passions in education in an effort to give your children the best education possible.

I am excited about the years to come leading OQS further into educational excellence! There are so many exciting things already happening here at OQS that it’s hard not to feel a sense of pride and excited anticipation as I join the wonderful staff, students, and families here. Please find time to come in and introduce yourself to me.
